Richard Phillips, who was the captain of the Maersk Alabama when it was taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009, will speak at the Dillon Lecture Series on Tuesday, September 23. The lecture begins at 10:30 and the ticket cost is $10. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Phillips wrote a book, “Captain’s Duty,” about his experience and it was later made into a movie starring Tom Hanks. The 53 year-old Phillips offered himself in exchange for the safety of his crew. The Vermont native was held captive on a tiny lifeboat off Somalia’s shores. The five-day stand-off between Phillips and the pirates ended when US Navy SEALS opened fire and picked off three of the captors.
President Barack Obama said, “I share the country’s admiration for the bravery of Captain Phillips and his selfless concern for his crew. His courage is a model for all Americans.”
