Rosanne Cash, her husband John Leventhal, and their band performed at Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre Saturday evening. They were promoting the album, “The River and the Thread.”
She performed the entire album in the first half of the show, telling stories about how she and her husband traveled through the south and were inspired to write the songs. Stories of her Cash family ancestors in the Sunken Lands of Arkansas gave a personal element to the tales.
The second half of the show included a mix of her hits, songs from “The List,” and a variety of other songs. A highlight of the evening was her rendition of the Ballad of Billy Joe, with just her singing, accompanied by Leventhal on the guitar. Few people can do justice to such an iconic song, but Cash soared through it with expert attention to the rise and fall of the tune and the emotion of the song.
